Chapter 18 - You Cut a Lovely Figure

Maria

Maria leaned back in the passenger seat of Georgette’s car and shut her eyes. “This week has been too long. I’m so happy it’s Friday.” She rubbed her face, trying to wipe away the tension.

“Have you heard anything from the new wolf?”

“Blake? No. The Ferns? Yes. They should be arriving today.”

Georgette made a happy sound. “That’s not only two more wolves returning to the pack, it’s Rainy. She’s what, four?”

“Rainy is six, and I can’t wait to play with her. Do you think she grew much in the last eight months?”

“Are you sure she’s six? I could’ve sworn she was only four when she left.”

“You’re awful. She was five when she left, but her birthday is in March, so she’s six. You can debate her age with her. I’m sure that will go over well.”

Georgette laughed as she pulled into the garage. “Well, you can open up your eyes, trudge up to your room, and crash”

Stretching, Maria yawned. “No, I can’t. I have a stupid-ass date tonight with one of those app people.”

“You say that like they’re all pod people.”

“Well, it’s kind of how it feels. The first two dates were busts.” Maria pulled herself from the car and headed into the house. She heard talking in the living room and like a moth to flame, followed the commotion.

The Ferns had returned.

Jolly sat on one of the couches, looking tired. She’d tied back her brown hair and wisps were trying to escape, looking as bedraggled as her drooping body. Rainy slept across her lap. Timothy, Rainy’s dad, slouched with his head lolled to one side. The light from the lamp next to him glared off his bald head and his mustache looked wild and unkempt.

Jolly gave her and Georgette a wan smile. “Hi, you two. It’s so nice to see you.”

Maria chuckled. “Why are you all up? You kind of look like the living dead. Go, take a nap.”

“Mmmm,” Timothy moaned. “Bed.” He tried to straighten. “We were promised pizza, and the little one hasn’t eaten. It’ll be better if we get food into her first, then we collapse and play tomorrow. Tory isn’t home, Connie’s at work, and Orin is picking up the food.”

“Will you join us?” Jolly asked, her smile brightening.

Georgette sat in the loveseat. “I will. Pizza sounds great.” She pushed Maria towards the stairs. “This one has a date,” she said in a singsong voice.

The other two lit up. Before they could ask any questions, Maria bolted to her room to get ready.

Nothing in her closet seemed appropriate for a date with a woman so … exciting-looking. She decided to start with a cute bra and undies set. Not that she expected to get that far. But she had a few matching sets, and they made her feel sexy. Why do romance authors always write about undies being ripped off? These things are expensive.

She slipped the wine-colored set on, and felt more daring. She gazed at herself in the mirror, hands on her hips and smiled.
